To download music online, for many, means to perform an illegal action. This is due to large scale news stories revolving around such companies as Napster, Kazaa, and torrent sites like The Pirate Bay. However, today many more positive associations arise.

For instance, it is possible to purchase and download music from completely legal sites and methods. Amazon, iTunes, and eMusic are just a few examples of online music stores. Many people enjoy the speed and ease of such possibilities. These purchases do not involve hard copies so they are much easier to store and much more affordable.

Many artists happily allow their fans to download music from them for free. The free material often operates to spread their name and build greater support more than anything. Sometimes, artists will do such actions against the wishes of their record labels.
