Indian Music

Indian music has a history which spans over millennia. Today, as in all places, they have many folk, pop, classical, and R&B sounds. They also have an older history of Carnatic and Hindustani music. These are an important aspect of different cultural beliefs in the area.

Classical Indian music will generally claim Vedic origin. Hindustani is generally found in the northern and central parts. Though it does have older roots, it was further developed around the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. During this time it had many Persian influences. The existing religious and folk music of the region also had an effect.

Carnatic Indian music, on the other hand, was found mostly in the peninsular regions. It's most modern form can be traced back to around the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. It is completely melodic with some improvised variations. Vocal music is a major emphasis.
