Old Music
Old music dates far back beyond what we are capable of imagining. This is because many instruments have been found dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization and even to Paleolithic times. Examples from the former include seven-holed flutes and stringed instruments. Bones with lateral holes which have also been labeled as flutes are the most common Paleolithic finds.
Sometimes people search for old music in the interest of finding works in the public domain. The concept of something being within the "public domain" is that no one owns or controls it. Music and lyrics published in 1922 or earlier are considered as being within the Public Domain in the U.S.
However, while this old music is within the public domain, sound recordings are not. For that reason, a person who wishes to use a music recording must either make it his- or herself or license a royalty free recording. This is true regardless of whether or not the music or lyrics are within the public domain.
